I think it’s a bad sign when I’m already dreaming of summer and it’s only November 8th. I was browsing through some summer vacation photos and I came across this one. The kids on the beach on a hot and sunny day. They all look so happy and sandy and slightly sunkissed. I guess this cold, rainy weather we’re having isn’t helping with the summer daydreaming.

6 NovAfter a 2 week break from my photo course I had to get my assignments done this week-end. Unfortunately the weather was grey and rainy the whole week-end so my contro-luce (against light) shots outside couldn’t get done. So I moved the shoot inside with some bright lights. I also had to do some contrast shots as well. I seem to be having a hard time getting my shots IN FOCUS. I can’t understand what’s going wrong. Maybe I need glasses?
This is one of my light contrast shots. As I mentioned earlier, the shot is out of focus.

I was just browsing through some photos of our trip to Canada this past summer and I came across this photo of a gorgeous ox getting ready for the pulling contest. There were the most beautiful oxen at this country fair. I think I took hundreds of photos of various pairs in their holding pens. They all had such different physical features and manneurisms. Besides my children, oxen have become my next favourite subject to photograph.
Kiva Kids

We are a very fortunate family. So we try and do as much for other as we can. A few weeks ago my children and a few friends decided they wanted to have a cake/cookie/coffee stand at a local market and give the money to a good cause. After discussing with their friends they all decided on Kiva. My kids have been loaning on Kiva for years and they love they fact that they can keep re-loaning the money to new people once it has been paid back. So after a Saturday of constant baking, painting and planning the kids were ready for the market early the next day. In the end they sold every single cupcake, cookie and brownie. Plus lots of Papa’s nespresso coffee. The grand total was 170 euro. I guess the fact that they’re all adorable helped a bit.

How incredibly cool is my daughter? Instead of dressing up as Katy Perry or Miley Cyrus she picked Regine Chassagne from Arcade Fire to dress up as. Regine is definitely the kind of role model I’d like my daughter to have. She’s an artist, musician, singer and philanthropist. While taking these photos she was humming the tune Sprawl II.

I live in a very small Italian town. I think the latest population count was around 3000. Usually Halloween isn’t celebrated or even known in Italy but in our little village it is the most awaited evening of the year for at least 150 of the 3000 inhabitants. I guess the fact there are a few North Americans living here has helped the adoption of Halloween (fun fact…we are 3 North Americans with twins in this ever so small paese…something in the water?).
Halloween is my opportunity to make all sorts of delicious North American specialties for the locals to try. So far they’ve been very fond of all the new desserts. Cheesecake, cupcakes, pumpkin pies, Hello Dolly squares….it’s possible they all went to bed with a bad case if indigestione.
Black and orange aren’t my favourite colour palattes to work with so I’ve decided to use the colours that inspire me. Plus, we’re in Italy…it’s not like they know Halloween is all about dark and dreary.
It’s amazing what kids can do with a few used greasy pizza boxes.
Fotografia week 2…
24 OctWeek number 2 of my photography class in Milan. Again it was very interesting. Lots of confusing talk about “stops” of all different nature but in the end I left feeling like I’d learned a lot. Part of this week’s assignment was to do some movement shots. One action shot with a short shutter speed (which would freeze the moment), one with a longer shutter speed (which shows the movement but still makes it recognizable) and an attempt at a panning shot. I’m not really satisfied with my photos but I’m slowly on my way I think. I hope.
